Who doesn’t love a good piece of steak? At Yummy Jubbly, we sure do! When it’s at a bargain price of £10 a steak, there’s even more to love.
At Flat Iron, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Steak cooked exactly how you like it for only £10. Taking it’s name after the cut of steak on offer (from the shoulder of the cow), Flat Iron opened in 2012. I remember going to check it out not long after it opened. Back then, with the one restaurant, the wait was over 2 hours for a table. Now there’s three branches, and if you go at the right time, there’s not long to wait.
I went to the Denmark Street branch in Covent Garden.
The service is super friendly and you’ll be well looked after. It’s a really relaxed restaurant with canteen style long tables. The staff take the time to explain the menu to you, which includes explaining the cut of beef used for the steak and the different sides and sauces on offer. What’s changed with Flat Iron since my last visit is there is now a seasonal special item – when I went recently it was the burger, which is made using the same flat iron cut.
When you’re seated down, you’re given a cup of popcorn to snack on. You might think this is odd, until you realise they’ve used the beef drippings to flavour the popcorn – giving Flat Iron another reason to be unique!
The marbly steak was cooked exactly how I liked it – medium rare. Char-grilled yet super tender. I had no complaints with it! It looked a little pink, but it wasn’t bloody at all. You also get a really cool mini cleaver to cut your steak with! Each steak comes with a serving of their house salad, which is essentially some fresh greens with a simple dressing.
A good quality steak like this would only need some salt and pepper – Flat Iron leave it up to you to season the steak. There’s a really good pepper mill on the table too! But you can also opt to spend an extra £1.00 and choose one of the sauces to accompany your steak. I chose the peppercorn and was not disappointed! It was creamy and peppery, but not too overpowering, so it complimented the steak really well. Seriously worth spending the £1.00!
I also tried out the special item which was the burger – simply served in a seeded bun, with shallots and a Bearnaise sauce. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover! Although it looked like it hadn’t been put together with much care, it was definitely cooked with love. The same quality of meat as the steak, meant the burger patty was full of flavour. The Bearnaise sauce was also not too rich and was just about enough to compliment the burger. I wish the shallots were fried though, as it would add some crunch to this – or there was some salad.
To go with the steak and burger, I ordered some chips. Not any old chips though, they were cooked in the beef drippings. So yummy and crispy!
So overall, I had a pretty good time at Flat Iron and I’m giving them 4 yums altogether. The steak on it’s own is probably not enough to fill you. But with the sides it’s a pretty pretty meal. Or if the burger is on offer, then go for that. It’s a pretty cool dining experience and I’d highly recommend it. But it won’t be worth it if you have to wait 2 hours, so make sure you get there early!
