This week we went to Bao! The soft fluffy, cloud like buns that everyone is crazy about. Located on a small side street in London’s Soho, Bao is definitely not one to miss. We were out and about that night and being the spontaneous pair that we are, we thought we’d sneak in a quick snack before heading off home.

We literally got there 15 minutes before closing time. We even had to place our order whilst we waited outside for a table! It’s only a small restaurant but every table had been taken up – and this was on a Monday night!

As this was supposed to be a “light” snack, we opted for just a few things:

Classic Bao (£4.00) – braised pork, fresh coriander, peanut powder, fermented greens. As its names suggests, its the classic bao to have. All the flavour was in the braised pork, everything else was to compliment the pork rather than enhance it. The other good thing about this particular bao is that 25p from each one sold goes to Action Against Hunger. So if you’re feeling charitable then order this!

Classic Bao London

Lamb Shoulder Bao  (£5.00) – braised lamb shoulder, coriander sauce, garlic mayo, soy pickled chilli. We both absolutely loved this one!!! As Kitty described it, this is the Chinese Kebab. The cumin strong lamb, deeply intense coriander sauce, creamy garlic mayo, sharp and spicy chilli – four bold flavours that came together so well, we were speechless. If you’re eating at Bao, you must try this Lamb Shoulder Bao.

Fried Horlicks Ice Cream Bao (£4.00) – if you like an ice-cream sandwich, then you must try this out. The bao is deep fried then sliced in two, sandwiched in between is a scoop of Horlicks ice cream. Its normally a normal plain bao, but we’d suggest asking if they have the black sesame bun! Sensitive teeth foodies beware of biting straight into the bun with the ice-cream though! This was definitely a yummy end to our spontaneous meal.

So in total our meal came to just over £20 and we’re giving Bao a whopping 4.5 yums – and this was only having tried 3 items. We’re definitely visiting Bao again to try out the other dishes on offer!
