We made it to the Big Easy this week!
Famous for its “Bar.B.Q” meats that have been specially selected and lobsters, the Big Easy has three different prime locations in London. We chose the newest of them – Canary Wharf’s cross rail. It was our first time there, having heard so much about it. It’s also hard to get a table, if you don’t book ahead – unless you want to be told to wait two hours!
All the meats are smoked on the premises, so you’re sure to get the real deal! As you walk into the restaurant, you’ll see the open kitchen where the chefs are busy preparing your meal. There’s also a large bar area, serving all kinds of drinks – which becomes jammed packed once its past 5pm.
So here’s what we had:
Steak & Half Lobster & Slushie Cocktail (£23.50) – a pretty decent surf & turf! The lobster had a special garlic sauce dressing and the steak was cooked to order (medium rare for us of course), accompanied by a side salad and chips. This is the Thursday daily special, so comes with your choice of their slushie cocktail – Kitty went for the Pina Colada! Don’t be worried if you’re not quite sure how to tackle the lobster claw and legs, the waiters are kind enough to teach you – they saw Kitty struggling and gave some hints on where to crack the shell to get all the meat out (see the tools to the left of the picture?). The daily special is different every day. So if lobster and steak isn’t quite your thing, but you’d still like a deal, then go a day that has a meal deal for you! Or if you think half a lobster isn’t enough, you can add £5 to have a whole one instead.
What better way to try out Big Easy’s meats, other than to have a platter?! This one comes with: Pit-Smoked Bar.B.Q. Chicken, Dry-Rubbed St Louis Pork Ribs, Carolina Pulled Pork, accompanied by sides of Bar.B.Q pit-smoked beans, slaw and homemade Bar.B.Q sauce. The best bit about this tray of food were those ribs. Gosh they were good! So tender, it was falling off the bone and melting in your mouth. There’s not much taste, so we’d suggest smothering it with some of the sauce or the beans. Sadly, the chicken was dry and the pulled pork wasn’t anything special. If you like a tray with a little bit of everything, then this is for you. Otherwise, go for the ribs on their own!
So overall we’re giving the Big Easy 3 yums out of 5. There were parts of the meal that was good, but some were so-so. There some nice touches, like the bib and the wet wipes. The staff are also friendly when they speak with you, but when it gets busy, they can’t keep up and you will feel neglected at times. We’d definitely come back again to try out the other dishes on the menu. But we wouldn’t wait two hours for a table.
